GREENFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — Greenfield’s Veterans Day Parade drew large crowds to the downtown area under bright sunshine and warm temperatures. Upper Pioneer Valley Veterans Services Director Christopher Demars spoke of late the United States Senator John McCain, who was a prisoner of war for five and half years during the Vietnam War.
“Like John McCain, there are veterans all over America, including here in Greenfield, who continue to serve our communities after they served our country in the military,” said Demars. “They may not be senators, but their impact is felt locally. They’re all around you, and you don’t know it.”
Demars also acknowledged the city of Greenfield for recently passed legislation to benefit veterans and their families.
“Thank you to the Mayor and the City Council who voted unanimously to adopt the recent state HERO Act to help our veterans and surviving spouses with service connected to disabilities with their property taxes,” said Demars. They are the first in Franklin County to do so.”
Demars says he will work to persuade the other 25 towns in Franklin County to adopt the HERO Act.
