GREENFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — Greenfield City Council voted in approval of Council President Lora Wondolowski writing a letter of support in the Mayor’s request to the State Legislature to receive funding from the Environmental Bond Bill for the Lunt property cleanup project.
The site of the former Lunt property at 298 Federal Street has tested positive for trichloroethylene (TCE) primarily, but other related chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) have also been detected.
According to the National Cancer Institute, TCE is used “primarily to make refrigerants and other hydrofluorocarbons and as a degreasing solvent for metal equipment” and people can be exposed to TCE through contaminated drinking water or inhaling contaminated air, either indoor or outdoors.
Councilor John Bottomley called this the city’s “best chance” of getting funding for the project that threatens the health of those living and working in the area.
