(Greenfield, MA) – Parents hoping to send their children to summer camp this year will have to find another means of distraction.

The Greenfield Recreation Department has announced the cancellation of the Summer Camp for the 2020 season.

”It is with incredible sadness that we write to you today to inform you that we have made the extremely difficult decision to cancel Summer Camp for 2020. Camp holds a special place in our hearts and we are devastated,” the directors wrote in the recent press release.

Part of the reason for the cancellation are the state’s COVID-19 compliance guidelines, which camp operators say are complicated, as well as the risk of additional exposure to COVID-19. Many of the normal camp activities, like capture the flag, kickball, and tag would not be possible with current guidelines.

“We strongly believe that if the camp were to run, it would not be a rewarding experience for our campers or our staff given these restrictions,” the press release read.

Current preparations are under way for fall and at this point Summer Camp 2021 is still a go. The Greenfield Community YMCA Thursday also announced the cancellation of all summer camp programs for the summer, due to COVID 19 concerns
