GREENFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — As Greenfield prepares to make the transition to single stream automated recycling pick up in early July, two meetings were held yesterday to address accessibility concerns and other questions from residents.

The city will be making accommodations for residents with mobility disabilities, who may submit a form through the city website to notify the city of their mobility disability.

Some residents have expressed concern over the new, larger 95-gallon bins that will be delivered to each residence free of charge. The city has begun creating videos to show the ease of rolling the carts and will be offering smaller 65-gallon carts for those who produce less recycling.

It was noted by grant writer Athena Bradley that nothing outside of the bins will be collected as the drivers cannot exit the vehicles on the pick up routes, so cardboard must be contained within the cart and the cart lid must be shut for the automated vehicle to empty it.

Another resident asked if days or times of pick up will be changing and Bradley confirmed days will remain the same, at least in the beginning, although it may change in the future as the larger vehicles purchased with the over $2 million grant may allow the city to reduce the number of days recycling is picked up. Times will also remain the same, recycling will need to be curbside by 7 a.m., and the new carts will prevent water logging if residents place them out the night before.

Further information is available through multiple sources, including a dedicated page on the city website.
