(Northampton, MA) — It looks like Northampton voters will get to decide this fall whether to establish a city-owned Broadband Internet service. The Northampton City Council has given initial approval for a ballot question to see if the city favors establishing a “municipal light plant,” which would provide the regulatory structure for a city-owned Internet provider. Greenfield has such a system in place known as “G-CET”, which allows residents a less expensive Broadband option than what is currently available on the open market. Final approval of the ballot question is expected at the council’s next meeting.
