(Hatfield, MA) Hatfield Elementary and Smith Academy are going remote for two days, according to an email announcement that went out to families last night. The decision comes as COVID-19 cases rise in Hatfield. Hatfield school officials expect to remain remote for the remainder of the week, but may extend remote learning further. In the letter to families, Conor Driscoll, principal of Hatfield Elementary, said the decision was not due to transmission in the school system but wide spread transmission in the community. The hope is that by closing the school for two days, contact tracers will have more time to alert anyone who has been exposed and needs to quarantine. An emergency school committee meeting on Saturday, November 14 will determine if the school will reopen on Monday for hybrid learning or remain remote.
