(Greenfield, MA) Last year, Greenfield suffered no deaths due to the cold and lack of housing as there were pandemic-era funds to support housing. This year will be different. Eviction moratoriums have ended, living expenses are higher.

“We are in a new situation,” said Susan Worgaftik of Housing Greenfield. All of the beds in the Wells Street shelter are currently full as well as the motel rooms that were utilized last year. And “this is true throughout the valley…there are no rooms available.”

Although beds may be made available, the bigger issue could be staffing. They are in need of volunteers to help keep the shelter running smoothly. Worgaftik called on the City Council to show leadership in finding help for the shelter from volunteers and area organizations.
