The COVID-shortened local high school basketball season is down to the last week of competition. The season began in late January after local school districts voted to allow games against other schools. The one exception was Frontier Regional, which eventually allowed the season to begin after the School Committee and district towns’ Boards of Health gave the OK. It was always a tenuous situation, as several Franklin County towns were either in the highest-risk Red category for COVID transmission, or in danger of falling into the red.
The season concludes with games next week. Bear Country 95.3 will air the boys game between Greenfield and Turners Falls on Tuesday night, and then conclude the broadcast season on Wednesday night with the Mohawk at Pioneer girls matchup. Both games begin at 5:30. Spectators are not allowed due to COVID-19 protocols.
According to Franklin County Technical School Athletic Director Joe Gamache, a finalized local football schedule could be in place by mid to late March, with games to begin approximately two weeks after that.
