(Greenfield, MA) – The director of the Greenfield Public Library says the facility will remain closed to in-person visitors, at least for now.

“I believe that having access to the physical materials in a library is incredibly important, but that access is not a priority right now – keeping people at home, safe, and alive is,” said Director Ellen Boyer in a statement.

The uncertainty about COVID-19, about how the virus is transmitted and how long it lives on surfaces, is behind the decision to keep libraries closed. Boyer said she is following the advice of the American Library Association, the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, and guidance from Governor Charlie Baker and local officials.

“When the time comes that we can ensure the health and safety of both our patrons and our staff we will once again offer access to the library’s physical collection,” said Boyer.

Despite the stay at home order, Boyer says e-books, audiobooks, streaming movies, digital magazines and newspapers, and telephone references services are available.
