(Boston, MA) Juneteenth is now a state recognized holiday in Massachusetts. This afternoon Governor Charlie Baker announced that his administration had signed a proclamation declaring Juneteenth a state holiday.

“Juneteenth marks an important moment in our Country’s history,” said Baker.

Juneteenth is the day where the Black Americans in Texas, some of the last people still enduring slavery, were informed that they were free.

“This holiday is a chance for us to recognize the painful history of slavery and racial injustice in this country,” said Baker.

Baker said Juneteenth is a chance to commit to building a more equal and just society. Baker said he looks forward to working with the legislature on how to further recognize Juneteenth as a holiday.
