Police K9, Niko, is missing in Gill as of 9:30 am this morning, Thursday, May 19th. Niko scaled two six foot high fences and ran into the woods while the Greenfield Police Department was having him kenneled as his handler was out of town.
According to the Greenfield Police Department, “Nearly a dozen K9 handlers from all over western Massachusetts assisted officers from Greenfield, Gill, Northfield, Environmental Police, Massachusetts State Police and members of the Franklin County Sheriffs Department in attempt to find and secure the Niko. Many residents of Gill also assisted us in the search. We were able to locate the dog four separate times, the latest near Kuzmeskus Bus company, but the dog, not being comfortable with anyone but his handler kept running away.”
The Greenfield Police Department has suspended their search in order to not create a dangerous situation for the K9 and his handler is on their way back to the area to help search. The police department said, “We truly believe as soon as his hander calls for him, he will return.”
Residents of Gill were asked to call the Gill Police Department at (413) 863-9398 if they find Niko and not to approach the dog themselves.
