Deputy Chief Brian Cook provided an update on the Leverett Joshua Hill fire early Sunday evening. At this time, the last crews are coming off the mountain for the day. As for the status of the fire, the lines are holding well right now and the fire has not grown over 55 acres. There are still hot spots inside red zone, shown above in the diagram of the fire perimeter, but the larger area the fire is not spreading outside of the red zone at this time. Cook said the fire is pretty well contained and controlled within that area.
Cook said the safety of the fire crews is the upmost priority. Since the fire is not threatening any structures or homes, crews are working slow and steady to minimize the risk of injury. Cook said crews are doing well and rotating on a daily basis, so the same crews are not on scene everyday and get a break. Since COVID-19 is still a concern, masks are available, as well as hand sanitizer. Individually packaged food is available for all firefighters. Cook said safety for the crews is priority.
Cook said the crews received numerous food and water donations from business and the community, and they are extremely grateful for the outpouring of support as they battle the fire.
