(Greenfield, MA)  — A popular Greenfield business owner for whom a local softball complex is named has passed away. Michael Murphy died unexpectedly on Tuesday at the age of 73. A Greenfield native, Murphy owned his own construction company and was responsible for the construction and renovation of many new buildings, homes, and commercial projects in the Greenfield area, as well as a number of municipal projects. He was also very active in the Greenfield Girls Softball League, and is perhaps best known for spearheading a half-million dollar fundraising effort to convert a dilapidated BMX track off Leyden Road into a girls softball complex known as “Murphy Park.”

Calling hours will be Sunday, June 6 from 4pm to 6pm at the Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home, 87 Franklin Street, Greenfield. A memorial service will be held Monday, June 7 at 11:00 am at the funeral home. Following the service, a celebration of his life will be held from 12:30 – 5pm at the Northfield Golf Club, 31 Holton St, Northfield, MA. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested memorial contributions in Mike’s name be made to the Greenfield Girls Softball League or the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Regional Dog Shelter.
