(Washington, DC) – Local politicians are reacting to the unprecedented events which occurred in Washington, DC Wednesday at the Capitol building.

Congressman Ed Markey released a statement on his Facebook page laying the blame for the act of domestic terrorism at the president’s feet

”Donald Trump is responsible for the coup that is unfolding in the Capitol. He is a fascist and a direct threat to our country,” Markey wrote.

Congressman Jim McGovern was in the building and released a statement shortly after the protestors stormed the building.

“Today, our freedom, our democracy, and our country were attacked by domestic terrorists who wanted to take away everything America stands for. They were acting under the orders of Donald Trump. This is a time for people from all walks of life to stand together and condemn these evil actions and those who perpetrated them.”

“Our freedom and our democracy will never be deterred. Not today. Not ever,” McGovern added.

William Tranghese, chief aide to Congressman Richard Neal, posted a Facebook photo of the door of Neal’s office which had to be barricaded to keep protestors out.

“They also broke the windows outside but were prevented from getting in from a bolted door. We eventually got evacuated by the police after tear gas was dispensed outside in the lobby next to the House floor,” Tranghese wrote. “I never thought something like this would happen in the US Capitol or in our country.”

“I am happy we are all safe and grateful for the many expressions of concerns from so many of you. Let’s hope we never see anything like this in America again,” he added.

Massachusetts Senator Jo Comerford also released a statement late Wednesday.

“Prayers for our federal delegation in Washington D.C. and the people of the Capitol. The whole supremacist nationalist violence is horrifying,” said Comerford. “I have dear friends there as I know many in Western Massachusetts do. May they be safe.”

Second Franklin State Rep. Susannah Whipps, a former Republican, expressed dismay at the lawlessness displayed by the protestors.

“This mayhem was inspired and encouraged by the president. He did nothing to stop it and he continues to speak of a landslide win that did NOT happen. Speaking a lie a thousand times over doesn’t make it a truth,” Whipps wrote. “Joe Biden & Kamala Harris won the election fair and square. Now more than ever, I look forward to January 20th.”
