From the City of Greenfield:
Main Street Gas Infrastructure Project To Begin Next Week
GREENFIELD – Berkshire Gas and JS Rae will be conducting infrastructure work on Main Street beginning next week to overhaul the city’s gasline infrastructure. This project will begin at the Main Street/Court Square crosswalk and gradually travel down Main Street to Conway Street. It will also address city intersections within this range, including Main and Chapman Street, Main and Miles Street and Main and Wells Street.
The city anticipates that the infrastructure work will be resolved in approximately 20 days from the start date, weather permitting. During the project, traffic will continue to travel in both directions on Main Street, with traffic detail officers on site to facilitate smooth traffic flow. Outdoor dining setups will not be impacted. The work will not occur during upcoming events, such as Memorial Day, Pride Parade and Green River Festival.
Infrastructure projects continue to be prioritized on Main Street ahead of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s commencement of the Main Street Redesign. Tentatively, the redesign is anticipated to begin in 2029. Completing infrastructure work ahead of the redesign is imperative to ensuring that the redesign can proceed without unexpected impediments.
City officials from the Department of Public Works, Mayor’s Office and Community and Economic Development Department met with Berkshire Gas and JS Rae this week to discuss the project’s scope and important guidelines, like dust mitigation and proper storage of equipment. The city will provide routine updates during the project’s duration to the business community and the general public.
