(undated) — Massachusetts grown eggs may soon be hard to come by. A voter-approved animal welfare law set to take effect on January first could, according to industry experts, render 90 percent of the eggs produced in the commonwealth unable to be sold. The House and Senate have approved separate versions of a new law to establish new standards for egg-laying hens, but the final version has yet to be approved by a conference committee. If that doesn’t happen and a final vote isn’t taken before the end of this month, the voter approved law takes effect which could trigger an egg shortage in Massachusetts in 2022.
