(Western Ma.) A naturally-occurring mineral is causing concrete foundations to crumble in some western Massachusetts homes. The mineral pyrrhotite has been found in Massachusetts quarries and when in a concrete mixture and then exposed to oxygen and water, can cause the concrete to crumble, leaving homeowners to pay for new foundations. Beginning in July of next year, quarries in the state will be required to test for this mineral to ensure it is not included in concrete.
