(Boston, MA) Massachusetts voters will have the opportunity to decide whether the state should reject the new license law allowing immigrants who are in the country illegally to get driver’s licenses. Governor Baker vetoed the law, however the veto was overridden by the Massachusetts House and Senate in June.
Election officials obtained enough signatures to put this repeal on the November ballot where voters can decide to repeal the law or not. Immigrant rights groups had pushed for this law, describing it as a public safety measure as driver’s licenses ensure drivers can safely operate a vehicle and obtain insurance. The group “Fair and Secure Massachusetts” say the law places an undue burden on the Registry of Motor Vehicles and it hurts the integrity of state elections.
