BOSTON, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — Starting April 1st, 2026 boaters will have to complete a state-approved education course that includes navigation rules, emergency procedures, and environmental protections as part of the Hanson-Milone Boater Safety Act signed into law by Governor Maura Healey.
The Massachusetts Environmental Police are working to raise awareness now to help prepare and provide resources for boaters.
Boaters will have different deadlines to complete the course according to age. Those born after January 1st, 1989 will have to complete the course by April 1st, 2026, although no penalties will be enforced until September 1st, 2026. If you were born on or before January 1st, 1989 you will have an additional two years to complete the cours, which will be available through multiple avenues including online courses, in-person classes, and partnerships with local organizations.
