GREENFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — The City of Greenfield has named Paul Newell its new director of the Department of Public Works.
Newell succeeds Marlo Warner, who will serve his last day with the department on Friday, July 11 before departing to become the new director of the Hatfield DPW.
Newell has served in the Greenfield DPW since January of 1989, serving as an assistant mechanic, mechanic, master mechanic, foreman, assistant field superintendent, and field superintendent.
Newell was named deputy director of the department in September of 2024.

Paul Newell Named New DPW Director
GREENFIELD — The City of Greenfield has hired Paul Newell as the Department of Public Works’ new director. Newell, one of the city’s most seasoned staff members, has worked in the Greenfield DPW since January 1989.
Current DPW Director Marlo Warner will be departing from his role on Friday, July 11. He will be assuming a new title as the director of the Hatfield Department of Public Works, following decades of distinguished service to the city of Greenfield.
During his three decades in the DPW, Newell gained experience across several divisions. He worked as an assistant mechanic, mechanic, master mechanic, foreman, assistant field superintendent, and field superintendent. Additionally, Newell served as the city’s first certified tree warden.
Newell was named the Greenfield DPW deputy director in September 2024, supporting critical executive functions of the department.
“Paul is a tireless worker who has developed a comprehensive understanding of DPW operations across his career,” said Mayor Virginia “Ginny” Desorgher. “His decades of experience will be a tremendous asset as our new director. I would also like to thank Director Warner for his tremendous leadership of the DPW and wish him well on his new venture.”
