SOUTH DEERFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — The bridge over the train tracks on North Main Street in South Deerfield has been closed since May and there is no estimated date of reopening, although MassDOT may be able to begin construction before the end of this year and complete the project by the end of the winter.
The bridge requires a full superstructure replacement and this bridge if one of the last in the state with a wood superstructure, making material sourcing a challenge. Other factors contributing to the lengthy closure include collaboration with the railroad company on construction plans and the regular processes of procurement and permitting.
