(NORTHAMPTON, MA) – The victim of the Dec. 1 fatal shooting in Northampton has been identified as 39-
year-old Joseph R. Fillio of Pittsfield, who died after being shot in the head around 11 p.m. Dec. 1 in a
downtown apartment.
In connection with the shooting, Northampton District Court Judge John McKenna ordered Steven J.
Malloy, 32, a Springfield man whose address is listed as the streets of Northampton, held without bail at
his arraignment Thursday on a single count of murder.
Detectives with the Northampton Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Unit attached
to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office are investigating the homicide, the first in Hampshire
County this year.
Northampton police were summoned to the Randolph Place apartment by a bystander shortly after 11
p.m., where they found the victim on the floor suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He was
transported by ambulance to Baystate Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Malloy was not present in the apartment, but witnesses identified him as Malloy, who had been seen
fleeing the area on foot. Police started a search and Malloy was later found in the vicinity of West Street and placed under arrest.
Assistant Northwestern District Attorney Matthew Thomas handled the arraignment on behalf of the
Commonwealth. Malloy was represented in court by Defense Attorney Nicholas J. Horgan.
