(Amherst, MA) On May 3rd a racist email was sent out at UMass to Black student groups, individual Black students, and a UMass office. The email called Black students “animals” and other hate-filled messages. It also referred to the ongoing investigation of other racist and anonymous emails sent in the fall 2021 semester.
The Northwestern District Attorney David E. Sullivan released a statement on the issue on May 4th saying “there is an effort to use misinformation as a weapon to provoke fear and mistrust” and that the email is “an attempt to sow discord and division within the UMass Amherst community.”
NWDA Sullivan believes “the UMass community is far stronger and smarter than the writers of this email seem to think” and he stands “in solidarity with people of color who are targets of this hate campaign.” The NWDA along with the UMass Police Department are conducting a thorough investigation on the matter.
