(Shelburne Falls, MA) The heavy rainfall at the beginning of the week drove the flow of sewage at the Shelburne Falls Waste Water Treatment Facility, WWTF,  up to six times its designed capacity. The four inches of rain that fell resulted in 1,000 gallons per minute flowing through the facility, and wastewater flowing out into the Deerfield River was treated below the required 85% removal. Acting Chief Operator Daniel Flueriel advised the public to avoid the waters downstream of the facility at least through today and will provide notice the condition have returned to normal.
