Here is the press release from the city on Wednesday afternoon:
Greenfield to Conduct Olive Street Parking Garage Cleaning, Scheduled for Monday May 19 through Friday May 23
GREENFIELD — The City of Greenfield has scheduled the Olive Street Parking Garage to receive a thorough cleaning. The cleaning will take place during the week of May 19 to May 23. The measure is in response to concerns from citizens and business owners at a recent Mayor’s listening session.
During the week of May 19-23, parking spaces and stairwells throughout the garage, as well as entire floors or the garage elevator, may be closed to the public at times. The cleaning is expected to generate dust that may present a hazard to those with a sensitivity to dust exposure, as well as settle on vehicles parked in the garage. Caution tape will be used to mark areas closed to the public and to warn of the hazard presented by the cleaning process. Other parts of the garage that are not actively being cleaned will remain open; vehicle owners will be able to exit the garage at all times.
Regular users of the garage who would like to avoid the area while the cleaning takes place are encouraged to use the Chapman-Davis Lot (next to the skatepark), which will have free parking for the duration of the cleaning. Other nearby on-street parking and parking lots are also available for those seeking an alternative location and can be found on the city’s parking map at greenfield-ma.gov/parking.
The city expects to conduct semiannual cleanings of the garage going forward. The city is also exploring improved lighting on the sidewalks exiting the garage as well as adding parking kiosks to pay for parking, alongside the Passport app.
“The Olive Street Parking Garage is an important fixture in our community, and as such, we need to treat it with tremendous care for all who utilize it,” said Mayor Virginia “Ginny” Desorgher. “I want to thank the various businesses that communicated this concern. This aligns closely with my vision of beautifying our downtown so that it is a more welcoming place for all to visit and shop.”
As a reminder, the cost to park in the Parking Garage is $0.40 per hour Monday through Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and is free at all other times, including the first hour. The top floor of the garage is free to park April 1 to November 30 and is closed in the winter due to inclement weather. A monthly permit for the garage is $35.
