GREENFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — The Massachusetts Appeals Court heard oral arguments in the Buchanan versus the City of Greenfield and former Police Chief Robert Haigh Jr. case after the city and Haigh filed an appeal against the jury’s findings of racial animus, acting out of racial discrimination.

The appellants’ lawyer, Leonard Keston, argued that evidence related to former Sergeant Dan McCarthy’s flag on his personal property influenced the jury’s decision even after the judge told them to disregard it.

The defense argued there was sufficient evidence beyond the flag to support their case. No decision has been made yet.
