Staff Report

(Northfield, MA) The town of Northfield and the Pioneer Valley Regional School District will have to go back in begin the process of hiring a new school resource officer (SRO). Chosen candidate Michael Williams decided not to accept the offer of the position, largely due to the full-time position only secured through June 30th, 2023. That message was delivered at the Northfield Selectboard meeting on Tuesday by Police Chief Jon Hall. The funding for the position, is currently shared by Northfield and the school district.

That topic has been brought up at recent school committee meetings where current part-time SRO Billy Kimball has stated the importance of having the position become full-time in order to be available whenever incidents may arise and spend time in the elementary schools in the district. The school committee does not currently have other applicants in mind and Interim Superintendent Patricia Kinsella is unsure of what steps would be taken if the position is not filled.
