(Franklin County, MA) The Massachusetts Department of Motor Vehicles, or RMV, will continue to accept online renewals of state IDs and licenses through August 12, 2020. Anyone who completes the renewal online at this time will be eligible for a free Real ID in 2021. Anyone with an expired or expiring ID between June 2018 and August 2021 is eligible for this service. Between June 12, 2020 and July 1, 2020 21,300 IDs have been renewed online. Compared to this time last year, where 9,200 IDs were renewed.

“The RMV is encouraging all of our customers to stay safe, save time, and go online during the COVID-19 pandemic to renew their license or ID card, rather than attempting to come in to get a Real ID,” said RMV Registrar Jamey Tesler in a press release.

Customers who choose this renewal option will have to wait until February 2021 to visit a service center and obtain their Real ID. A YouTube video explaining the campaign can be seen here. To complete a renewal application online go to mass.gov/RMV.
