(Greenfield, MA) Update: A third sanitary overflow in July was detected in Greenfield on Friday at 4:07 p.m. lasted until Saturday at 11:49 a.m. discharging a total of 1,410,000 gallons of untreated sewage and waste. The overflow was discharged from a regulator chamber outfall behind 302 Deerfield Street on the Green River when the city was experiencing moderate to heavy rains during a flood watch. The public is advised to avoid contact with the impacted bodies of water including the Green River and Deerfield River in Greenfield and the Connecticut River in Deerfield, Montague and Sunderland until Monday at 11:49 a.m.

Update: The sanitary overflow is ongoing as of 8 a.m. Saturday morning. The rate of discharge has slowed from the initial 1,500 gallons per minute to 695 gallons per minute. The City of Greenfield is advising the public to avoid contact with the impacted bodies of water (Green and Deerfield Rivers in Greenfield and the Connecticut River in Deerfield, Montague, and Sunderland) for the time being and 48 hours after the overflow ends as there are increased health risks from bacteria and other pollutants.
