TURNERS FALLS, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — Rescue crews earlier today resumed the search for an individual possibly in the Turners Falls Power Canal.

Turners Falls Fire Chief Todd Brunell said several agencies were involved.

“The Massachusetts State Police Underwater Recovery Team along with the Massachusetts Environmental Police assisted us with resuming searches in the water of the canal,” said Brunelle. “Both the dive operations and the Remote Operated Vehicle search proved to be unfruitful.”

Today’s effort came after a four-hour overnight search after someone had called for help at about 10:00 p.m. Monday. The bike path between 11th Street and Depot Street is closed as the investigation continues.

In the meantime, Chief Brunelle urged caution around all waterways.

“What I would like the public to know is that, in general, and particularly this time of year, that no ice is safe ice. Especially over moving water, ice can never be considered safe.”

Franklin County Now will have further details on the situation when they become available.
