(Montague, MA) The South Street Bridge Replacement project in Montague Center has been moved up by MassDOT and will begin work in November of this year. The bridge will be fully closed to all traffic including pedestrian and bicycles during the construction, which is expected to last until mid-June on 2025. The project was originally scheduled to begin in the summer of 2025, however due to environmental conditions and the need to be in the water for portions of the work, it has been moved up on an accelerated schedule.

Like the existing bridge, the new bridge will not include a sidewalk. MassDOT pedestrian studies found an average of fifteen pedestrians using the bridge per day in the summer, however expanding the bridge to include a sidewalk would impede on protected environmental lands on either side of the bridge.
