(South Deerfield, MA) South Deerfield Fire Department responded to Elm Street Wednesday morning when reports of a strong odor and smoke came in. At 6:30 a.m. units arrived at a commercial building to investigate heavy smoke coming from the facility. The smoke was coming from a large metal hopper which contained contents that had spontaneously combusted. The hopper that was removed from the building and hosed down, allowing the fire department to clear the scene shortly thereafter.
