(Greenfield, MA) — Greenfield High School’s football players weren’t the only ones to make history Friday night. The GHS win over Franklin County Tech marked the end of the season for Bear Country’s Jeff Tirrell and Shawn Hubert, the 30th the two have spent as a broadcast duo.
“It’s certainly been an unusual year, because here we are broadcasting our last football game on April 23rd,” Tirrell said. “Hopefully, things will return to normal with a full football schedule in September.”
“It’s been fun, and I look forward to starting out 31st season in the fall,” Hubert said during the post-game show Friday night.
Tirrell and Hubert first began broadcasting high school football games on WHAI Radio in the fall of 1991. The broadcasts eventually shifted over to Bear Country in the 2000’s, Tirrell and Hubert were honored at the end of Friday night’s game by friend and long-time radio colleague Robert “Bobby C” Campbell, who presented both with commemorative plagues and gifts in front of parents, fans and players from both the Greenfield and Franklin Tech squads.
“I’ve known these two guys forever,” Campbell said. “They are not just great broadcasters but great guys who are committed to promoting local sports in our community, and they deserve recognition for 30 years of service.”
Tirrell was presented with a shirt commemorating the Boston Celtics teams of the 1980s while Hubert received a Red Sox hat.
