AMHERST, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — A monkey research lab at UMass Amherst is shutting down.
PETA has ran a years-long campaign against the lab facility, which houses marmoset monkeys to research aging, women’s health, and Alzheimer’s disease.
In a news release from PETA on July 31st, the organization states they won a lawsuit waged against the laboratory in 2022 leading to the release of lab records and a payment of $50,000 from UMass to PETA for legal fees.
Dr. Agnes Lacreuse, head of the lab, claims she is shutting down the lab to step aside and allow other researchers to get more federal funding amid slashes to funding to the University.
