Orange Police Chief James Sullivan has updated the public on the case of fraud that resulted in the loss of about $338,000 from the town’s coffer,
“Two weeks ago, I received a felony indictment for larceny, for one person at this point,” said Sullivan. “The FBI has also picked up the case, and the U.S. Attorney General. I can’t get into too much on it right now. I’m waiting for an extraditable warrant. This person is more than halfway across the country.:
Sullivan said he is keeping the identity of the suspect under wraps at this point so as to not tip off this individual. Sullivan also credited the Northwest District Attorney’s Office.
“Nick Attallah is an Assistant District Attorney from the Northwest District Office, and he was instrumental in getting us this far,” said Sullivan. “The amount of subpoenas that he wrote just to follow the money was amazing. He was a huge help for us.”
Once Sullivan obtains the warrant, he plans to make that person’s identity very public in the town of Orange, saying this person has no connection to the town. The theft occurred sometime in the summer of 2023 and came to light that fall. Sullivan said he is not optimistic that the town will get back any of the money that was taken.
“We have a pretty good idea of where just about every dime went and most of it is not in this country,” Sullivan said. “Absolutely no money that we have found has come anywhere near back to Orange.”
