WARWICK, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — Warwick Police Chief David Shoemaker was struck twice by a vehicle while assisting a Sergeant in a motor vehicle stop. The vehicle then led the police in a pursuit, which eventually led to the vehicle crash and the male operator fled on foot while the female passenger was taken into custody. The operator has been identified and police are seeking charges against him.

On May 21, 2024 at approximately 3:19 PM, police were notified that a police officer had been struck by a motor vehicle in Warwick Massachusetts and the vehicle fled the scene. The vehicle was last seen headed west on 119 headed towards Hinsdale. A Hinsdale police unit responded to the area of Main Street and spotted the vehicle which took off at a high rate of speed a short time later the vehicle crashed on Brattleboro Road where both the driver and passenger took off on foot.
The female passenger, who was identified as Estrella Crespo was apprehended and charged with disobeying an officer. The male subject continued to flee on foot, unknown if he had a weapon or not. Due to the vicinity of the incident to the school, the school was notified and they were instructed to shelter in place.
The driver who was not apprehended has been identified as Michael Martelle who is a white male medium build and was last seen wearing black shorts and no shirt. This will be an on-going investigation, please contact Hinsdale Police Department if you have any information pertaining to this incident.

Anyone arrested or cited by the Hinsdale Police Department is presumed innocent until convicted of a crime in court.
