DEERFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — The West Nile virus has been detected and confirmed in mosquitos in Deerfield by the Massachusetts Department of Public Heath. The announcement was made by the DPH today, Tuesday, July 29th.
To date in 2025, there have been no cases of human transmission of West Nile virus. The virus can be spread to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito.
To stay protected from mosquito bites, repellents such as DEET, permethrin, picaridin, or lemon eucalyptus , according to product instructions can be effective. Wearing long clothing and knowing peak mosquito hours can also help avoid bites.
Residents are recommended to drain standing water around homes and to utilize screens for open windows and doors.
