(Amherst, MA) The University of Massachusetts has suspended 200 students after a weekend party that violated the campus standards. In an official statement, the University said students identified as being involved will be issued an interim suspension. Students living on campus will face housing restrictions due to the belief that they may pose a health risk to other residents.
“The actions of these haughty few are not representative of the larger student population who consistently demonstrate their commitment to public safety. This incident and others like it will be dealt with swiftly and effectively so those of you abiding by the rules can enjoy more university privileges,” read the statement by Brandi Hephner Labanc, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Campus Life.
On Saturday afternoon, the Amherst police were allegedly called by local residents to disperse a party of students who had gathered in violation of university policy. Reports indicate that many of the students attending the party were not wearing masks. Labanc said in her statement that over 1,000 referrals have been received since the beginning of the school year in regards to violations of Interim Pandemic Policy.
“I regret that this is where we have arrived,” said Labanc, “but the university must act to support the needs and wants of the greater student body and the larger community.”
