(Greenfield, MA) Update: The Greenfield Armory Building went to auction Wednesday and sold to the highest bidder for $390,500, although the property had been assessed at $1.2 million. The winning bidder’s identity will become public record in 60 days when the sale is complete. The property is in Urban Residential District and is a historic property.
Last June, the Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance notified Greenfield that the property was surplus and available for public use. The Mayor and City Council discussed using the property for low income housing, however they ultimately decided to not take on the project considering other ongoing projects at the time and so the property remained under DCAMM’s control.

The Armory Building at 67 Hope Street in Greenfield will be auctioned off on September 28th by JJ Manning Auctioneers. A public viewing of the property will be held on September 20th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The former National Guard Armory was built in 1910 and is assessed at $1.2 million and is zoned as Urban Residential District.
The City Council received a notice last June that the state would be making the property available for “direct public use” and Mayor Wedegartner was interested in using it for low income housing, an idea echoed by Housing Authority Director Thomas Guerino and Councilor Mayo.
However, city officials determined it would not be possible to take on another redevelopment project. So, the property remained under ownership by the Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance and after the sale to the highest bider later this month, the buyer will determine how it will be redeveloped.
