(Greenfield, MA) — New money to fight food insecurity needs to be part of the next federal COVID 19 aid package.
That’s the feeling of 2nd District Congressman Jim McGovern, who says he plans to push for increased funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in the next aid package. McGovern said hunger was a problem in America long before COVID 19 hit.
“Even before this happened, there were 40 million people in this country who didn’t know where their next meal was coming from,” McGovern said. “Everybody keeps talking about getting things back to normal, but that’s one status quo we don’t want to return to.”
Cuts to federal hunger programs have long been a bone of contention between the Trump Administration and Democrats in Congress. McGovern says he expects the pandemic will only worsen the problem of food insecurity, whic is why federal help is needed now.
