GREENFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — The Greenfield Public Safety Commission voted to recommend Captain Peter McIver for the position of Deputy Chief of the Fire Department to the Mayor’s Office for appointment.
Fire Chief Robert Strahan said Captain McIver was one of three candidates for the position and through a third party evaluation system, McIver rose through the ranks as the top candidate.
Strahan described Captain McIver as an “integral part of the department” who has embraced learning every part of the department and demonstrates a commitment to serving the community beyond his role as a fireman.
Captain McIver was also in attendance at the Public Safety Commission meeting Wednesday and said he looks forward to “all the challenges that come forward.”
When it came to voting on the recommendation for promotion, Commissioner Maria Burge said it was “no surprise” McIver was the chosen candidate and that sentiment was echoed by Commissioner Ed Jarvis as well.
Strahan said McIver acted in the Operations command role during a 2nd alarm fire on School Street Sunday where a Mayday alarm went out when two firefighters became trapped under a collapsed ceiling and that demonstrated how McIver can “handle anything that comes his way.”
