GREENFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — The City of Greenfield announced water and sewer rates will be increasing on January 1st, 2026 by 9.5% and 9.7% respectively. City officials say the rate increases are necessary for sustaining the operating budget, retained earnings, and capital expenses.

The City of Greenfield will be increasing water and sewer rates effective January 1, 2026. These rate increases, 9.5% in water rates and 9.7% in sewer rates, are required to sustain the operating budget, retained earnings, and capital expenses.
Not only do these increases pay for the dramatic increases in chemicals and supplies, but they are required to support catastrophic emergencies or unforseen regulatory events. The Water and Sewer Enterprise Fund also support equipment and vehicle purchases within the enterprise fund. Adequate fund balances in each Enterprise Fund accounts ensures financial stability and is financial best practice
