The Associated Press has called the U.S. Senate Democratic primary race in favor of longtime Senator Edward Markey. In early returns, Markey held a 71% to 29% margin over challenger Seth Moulton.
Moulton was seen as a more moderate choice in this election, but the 47-year-old’s campaign was not able to make inroads against the 80-year-old Markey, whose victory demonstrated both his appeal to voters as well as an affirmation of the party’s progressive wing.
Markey will face John Deaton in the November General Election. Deaton ran unopposed on the Republican side.
