MONTAGUE, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — The Town of Montague has chosen its new Department of Public Works Superintendent. The Selectboard has voted unanimously to offer the position to Sam Urkiel, currently the Deputy Director of the Greenfield DPW.

The board noted Urkiel’s experience and local ties in offering him the job. Upon agreement on a contract, Urkiel will take over for Tom Bergeron, who is retiring after over 20 years with the Montague DPW.

Town Administrator Walter Ramsey said town officials were very happy with the entire selection process.

“We had a great crop of candidates interested in working here, and that’s a testament to Tom’s management of the department over the years,” said Ramsey. “He helped bring in a new facility, helped modernize the equipment, and leaves behind a really well-run department ready for someone like Sam, who is growing in his career, to step in and bring it to the next level.”
