WARWICK, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — The Warwick Buildings and Energy Committee is recommending the town adopt the Massachusetts Specialized Opt-in Stretch Code which would give the town access to the $60 million the state has set aside for the Climate Leader Communities.

The optional, but strict energy efficiency code would impact new construction in the town, requiring higher energy efficiency and renewable energy integration. Wendell averages one new single-family build per year, however there is a rising trend of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) which would also be subject to the code.

The benefits would go beyond financial incentives to include a more resilient housing stock, but there are challenges such as limited local enforcement capacity and homeowner education.
