GREENFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — The state’s largest nurses’ union is raising concerns after Baystate Health eliminated positions across its healthcare network this week.

According to the Massachusetts Nurses Association, the layoffs affected employees in 22 departments, including dozens of information technology workers and other longtime staff members.

Union leaders say they are saddened by the job losses, noting many of those impacted spent years serving patients and the community.

The announcement comes as nurses at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield continue contract negotiations with Baystate Health. Earlier this month, registered nurses overwhelmingly rejected the health system’s latest contract proposal.

Union officials say talks will continue, with key issues including staffing levels, employee recruitment and retention, healthcare costs, and maintaining access to quality local medical care.
