TURNERS FALLS, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — A house fire in Turners Falls Tuesday morning injured a homeowner and a firefighter, while ammunition inside the building discharged from the intense heat, sending bullets several yards away from the property.

Fire crews were dispatched to 10 Sunset Drive shortly before 8 a.m. At least six fire departments responded to the two-alarm blaze, spending approximately two hours bringing the fire under control.

The homeowner sustained a minor burn and received treatment at the scene. One firefighter was transported to a hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.

As firefighters worked to extinguish the flames, the heat caused ammunition stored inside the home to go off. Police officers and other emergency personnel removed firearms from the residence after the fire was largely knocked down.

Despite the ammunition discharging, no other homes along the street were struck by bullets, according to the information provided.

Investigators are working to determine what caused the fire, which reportedly began in the garage.

The blaze left the garage completely destroyed, while the house sustained smoke damage. Officials have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The response involved multiple area fire departments and other emergency personnel, with crews working to contain the fire and address the hazards posed by ammunition and firearms inside the residence.
