(Greenfield, MA) — Thursday was a big night for Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Franklin County. The organization raised $15,000 dollars at its second annual point-5K run and walk at the Franklin County Fairgrounds in Greenfield. Around 450 people took part in the 546-yard event, which also featured dinner items served by local food vendors. The theme for this year’s event was “Heroes” and participants were encouraged to dress up as their favorite hero or superhero.

Event participant Charlie Choleva of Turners Falls told event organizers that he and his family were especially impressed with the food vendors. “They could have phoned it in with the basics but absolutely went over the top.”, Choleva said.
Several stops along the course provided participants a bite to eat from local eateries Adams Donuts and Mesa Verde in Greenfield and Antonio’s 2 in Bernardston. Turners Falls based Pioneer Valley Brewing Company made an exclusive pale ale just for the event which was available at the finish line. Adams Donuts also created a special donut just for Thursday’s event.

The money raised yesterday goes to help fund the organization’s mentoring programs and the hero theme helped highlight the important role mentors have as “Bigs” for the many children, or “Littles”, who are served by the agency. Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Franklin County Program Coordinator Ericka Almeida says the “Point-5K” will be the organization’s signature fundraising event.
