MONTAGUE, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — Montague’s pick to become the new assistant Town Administrator has decided to stay in her current position with the Town of Amherst. Athena O’Keefe of Greenfield notified Montague officials of her decision to withdraw.
Selectboard member Matt Lord said this week that this scenario is common, and difficult, for municipalities.
“Certainly, hiring for government is generally inefficient and difficult,” said Lord. “In a situation like this, Amherst had plenty of time to make counter-offers prior to when they did. I don’t know what we could have done to change things.”
The board is set to begin negotiations with the other finalist, Chris Nolan, who has said is ready to take the job.
Meanwhile, five candidates have been identified to become Montague’s new Department of Public Works Superintendent. Review of those applicants is set to begin tomorrow. And a hiring committee to replace retiring town accountant Carolyn Olson has been formed. Olson’s last day on the job will be September 22nd.
