(GREENFIELD) — Today marks the 19th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks on the United States. 2,977 lives were lost as a result of that day, including 343 firefighters and 71 police officers who responded to the scene in lower Manhattan.
For the second year in a row, Greenfield police and firefighters commemorated the anniversary of the attacks in a very unique and inspiring way. Firefighters in full gear and members of the police department were on the stair climbers at Planet Fitness in Greenfield. The men and women climbed the equivalent of 110 stories, the height of the buildings at the World Trade Center, honoring those first responders who entered the Twin Towers that day in an effort to rescue victims and save lives.
Several police officers and firefighters were on their stair climbers as nearby TV screens showed news coverage of the moment of silence at Ground Zero at 8:46 a.m., the moment the first hijacked plane hit the North Tower.
